Can a Tutor Help?

Joe Bruzzese, MA*, author of A Parents' Guide to the Middle School Years, suggests these questions when considering a
tutor:

  • Was there an extended absence from class where critical learning objectives were missed?
  • Are there signs of declining performance on assignments, tests and projects?
  • Will they miss a week or more of school due to a family trip or extracurricular commitment.
  • Do these statements sound familiar?
“I don’t understand what the teacher is talking about”
“I can’t remember anything we learn in class”
“No matter how hard I study I still fail the tests.”
*Mr. Bruzzese is currently a faculty member at UC Santa Barbara.
